Blog Post #7

This article discusses America's response to the plight of the people in the Philippines affected by the typhoon Haiyan. We have sent over 9,000 of our troops to the Philippines to distribute food, water, and first aid to the Filipinos. Britain has also sent lots of support to the Philippines, including their ship The HMS Daring, which distributed first aid and clean water to survivors. Although other countries have been quick to help the Filipino's plight, their own government has been criticized for not quickly responding after the typhoon.
This relates to AP GOPO because it deals with foreign relations and how our government responds to crises in other countries. The US is showing itself to be compassionate and capable by giving aid to this struggling country. This article also demonstrates that governments need to be strong enough to be able to cope with a potential disaster like this. If the Philippine government had possessed some sort of disaster plan, maybe they could have been more prepared to handle some of these problems. Then again, maybe not- this was such a huge catastrophe that it may have been impossible to bounce back and start running things again.
I think this is a really sad crisis and I'm glad America is able to give help to this country. I think this is a better use for our military than attacking Syria.

  1. I totally agree that helping the Filipinos is a much better use of our army than attacking Syria. I also agree that the Philippines should have had some sort of disaster relief program. It's better to be safe than sorry. I think it is great that other countries are helping them out in their time of need.

  2. I agree with Waverly because if a plan had been made for a potential disaster like this to happen, they would be way better off as they are right now and wouldn't need so much aid from other countries, but then again this is a devastation and I'm sure a disaster plan still wouldn't have done too much to prevent losses.

  3. I agree helping Philippines recover from this disaster is a better use of our resources than attacking Syria. It shows our strength to step in and provide the primary support, as we usually do. Philippines has struggled with poverty and corruption and they were not prepared for this type of extreme disaster-had few supplies or organized military and police to lead the effort. It is such an huge disaster they need the US safety net and help from many other countries.I heard that their neighbor China has contributed very little.

  4. I agree with helping the Philippines, but I also think that there government should have had a disaster plan ready for something like this even if it wouldn't have worked. It is good we are helping these people through this struggle and I hope they would do the same for us.
