My Article

Yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya, Islamic extremists took control of a mall and held everyone inside hostage. Around 175 people have been wounded and 59 are thought to have been killed, though numbers could be much higher than that. Kenyan military forces have entered the mall to try to save the hostages. The rebel extremists have stated that this attack was retribution for the 2011 Kenyan push into Somalia. Some mall visitors escaped the original shootout, but many are still trapped inside.

This article relates to AP Government because it involves terrorist attacks similar to what our government has dealt with in the past. Unfortunately it also relates to us because this horrible hostage situation could have also happened in America. This issue- mass shootings in a public area- sounds all too familiar. This situation further illustrates the instability of these extremist groups. Obviously we knew al-Quaeda and therefore al-Shabar as an extension of al-Quaeda were dangerous and unstable groups, but who would've been able to predict this horrible event happening?

This event is so horrible and upsetting. I feel so bad for the hostages trapped inside this mall because even the soldiers coming to save them might accidentally hurt them with their rocket-launched grenades. I hope these hostages can get out of the mall without anyone else other than possibly the extremists who captured them being hurt or killed.

  1. I agree it is horrible that this Somalian al-Shabar group is terrorizing innocent people just like al-Quaida has done in US and around the world. They are supposedly retaliating for Kenya's military going into Somalia. It also looks like they are making a political statement against Western/US-type wealth and culture since this mall is owned by Israelis and has lots of American stores.

  2. This is a very unsettling event. A expected death toll of 59 is high as it is but is awful to think that this number will likely climb. I heard on the news that President Obama has been in constant contact with the Kenya Government and the US is doing everything it can to lend a hand. I hope that the Kenyan Special Forces has the experience and ability to rescue these people. If they don't, I think it is only right to let another group do the job. Nationalism shouldn't get in the way when lives are on the line

  3. This article is very well written. I also think that it is very sad that these people are held hostage in the mall. The Government in Kenya should really be doing something about his terrible issue. Its so sad to think about all the innocent people who were hurt and killed in this terrible incident. I think the US has a lot of power and should give help if needed to the Kenya Government.

  4. This event is terrible and i really like how great this was written. Something needs to be done about the increase of shootings that have been occuring everywhere. Banning guns wont help, something bigger needs to be done, i think we should help a little, now we dont need to be getting the army in here but a little assistance would be nice.
